If walkability is a measure of how friendly an area is to walking, and bikeability is a measure of how friendly an area is to biking, then runnability is a measure of how friendly an area is to running. Urban design plays a vital role in shaping our daily lives–including access to fitness and friendship. Developing environments that remove barriers to physical activity and social well-being is a necessary step towards improving the healthy identity of a city and the people it serves.
What if we made it easier for people to take care of themselves and took care of them by providing running lanes as healthcare infrastructure?
Using this opportunity to create a fully programmed trail with active design principles outside of the paywall is a way to show investment and commitment to South Dallas neighborhoods and the city as a whole.
Perimeter trails are an effective design solution for providing pedestrian options for transportation and recreation in a community.
As an environmental designer, I know that the purpose of urban planning is for human health and that placemaking for running can be on anybody’s drawing board – if it is part of the conversation.
